Day 30: Your Mom’s Burger Bar

The burger: Frida Kahlo loved saturated colors. Her reds, yellows and greens matched only her gullwing brows for intensity. And given that a lot of her paintings were ornate self-portraits, she was stuffed full of herself. You see where this is headed, right? Straight to Your Mom’s, where the burgers begin as handfuls of fresh ground beef before they get wrapped around sausage or bacon or chorizo or cheese or some combination thereof, then grilled to a healthy char that seals in the true colors. The Frida Kahlo ($7.95) gets a core of chorizo and Jack cheese, finished with guacamole and chipotle lime spread and yes, a fried egg. And now your white shirt can be a canvas for all that extra yellow.

Ryan Blackmore started Your Mom’s in late 2009 after creating his own circle of demand cooking burgers for a rogue operation at Headhunters. His building on East Sixth shares a restaurant lineage with burger bars and taco shops stretching decades back, a space that presented itself just as Blackmore was shopping for trailer space on the East Side. Add one more tattoo for good timing.

Fries or rings? Both. Because both are cut in-house, starting as onions and potatoes in their bags and boxes from the field and going from there, the fries in a two-step oil bath, the rings in a beer batter that shags and flakes and shatters. A half order of either one is $1.25 with a burger.

Austin’s Best Burgers: Your Mom’s Burger Bar

Your mom. And, no I’m not trying to insult you (or your mom) – I would never be so rude. No, I’m actually telling you the name of the next stop in our search for Austin’s Best Burgers – Your Mom’s Burger Bar.

I can’t even remember how I found this place, but my friend Simcha and I discovered it during our college years, and it might have been one of the best food discoveries we made during college. Your Mom’s Burger Bar does something really unique with their burgers (well, it was really unique when we first discovered it) – they stuff the burgers with cheese rather than putting a slice on top. I’m a sucker for lots of ooey, gooey cheese, so a cheese-stuffed burger is A-OK with me.

But it’s not just the fact that the burgers at Your Mom’s are stuffed that makes the place so great, their toppings are pretty stellar as well. Each burger is special, with its own unique ingredients and toppings. Take for instance an American classic like the John D. Rockefeller (pictured below) – a 1/2 pound burger stuffed with monterey jack cheese topped with fresh spinach, tomato, artichokes, monterey jack cheese, parmesan cheese and a special sauce on a toasted bun. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more exotic, try the Chi Cheng – a 1/2 pound burger topped with monterey jack cheese seasoned with teriyaki sauce, topped with lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, fried wonton strips and Wasabinger™ spread on a toasted bun. Hello?! If you don’t think those sound amazing, just go ahead and leave right now.

I recently went to Your Mom’s Burger Bar with Brandon and tried a new burger – the Willie Nelson (sounds fun right?). The Willie Nelson (pictured below) is a 1/2 pound burger stuffed with american cheese, tossed in honey BBQ sauce then topped off with bacon, a fried onion ring & B.B. King sauce on Texas toast. This burger was G-O-O-D! I love fried everything (especially fried onion rings), and BBQ sauce is easily one of my favorite condiments, so the combination of the two is a W-I-N in my book. I would very much recommend that you try this burger out when you go to Your Mom’s. But a word of caution: The Willie Nelson burger is messy. My hands and my face were covered in sauce and cheese…I wasn’t complaining, but I imagine Brandon felt a little differently. Oh, and whatever burger you get, be sure to add on some sides – fries, onion rings, fried pickles, mom’s mackin’ cheese…it doesn’t even matter, they’re ALL winners!

Your Mom’s Burger Bar was originally a hole in the wall burger joint located off E. Cesar Chavez, but the place is movin’ on up – they now have a much nicer location located on Airport Blvd. right next to I35. It’s never been overly crowded when I’ve gone, but Your Mom’s isn’t a huge place, so definitely plan to go early if you want to insure you have a table.

Meet Austin: Your Mom’s Burger Bar

One of my new goals for 2013 was to try a few new restaurants a month in Austin. It seems like an easy goal because there are so many great choices but it’s actually the hardest goal because there ARE too many good choices!

I love finding new places from deal sites like this great burger joint I found from TravelZoo.

Your Mom’s Burger Bar in Austin (off Airport Blvd) is famous for it’s stuffed burgers and they didn’t disappoint. I tried the “Willie Nelson” which was “a 1/2 pound burger stuffed w/ American cheese, tossed in honey BBQ sauce then topped off w/ bacon, a fried onion ring & B.B. King sauce on Texas toast.” Can I just say, yum? Although I’m a sucker for anything with barbeque sauce and onion rings!

And the fries were really good. And the fried pickles were good (but a little too thick for my taste). And finally, those sweet potato fries drizzled with caramel were awesome. Definitely order those if you go.

We really enjoyed our lunch there and the owner was a fun nice guy. It’s not a huge place so I wouldn’t recommend a group over 6 as the tables don’t really accommodate it.

Anyways, stop by if you want a fun place and big juicy burger! We loved it!

lot’s of things going on with your mom’s! as always it is a work in progress. so much to do and so little time! just wanted to update y’all on some of the things we are working on…

just a heads up to let you know we now accept credit cards at the airport location! the cesar chavez location will soon be accepting cards as well. we will update you when that happens.

new location on airport blvd:

if you haven’t already… come by and check out the new airport location! the walls are bare and we only have 6 tables.. for now! [again.. a work in progress! we are working hard to get everything done... you can't get more "mom-n-pop" than your mom's! we are truly the poster children for mom-n-pop!] but the burgers are great! …and that is the most important thing right??
